Tales of a Jaguar Magician
Theatrical Adaptation Project
Tales of a Jaguar Magician
Mythic Theater in Development
Tales of a Jaguar Magician is a theatrical adaptation of a five-book mythic series structured as a five-act stage work. Each act corresponds to one volume of the series and follows a young Jaguar Magician through a series of initiations toward becoming fully empowered. Along the way they encounter figures embodying fractured power, shadow identities, trickster guides, and regenerative possibilities within a world in need of renewed imagination.
The project blends mask and puppet performance, spoken text, sculptural staging, lighting, and projection within a hybrid installation-performance format. Development focuses on translating the literary mythology into a cohesive stage work through rehearsal, fabrication, and community engagement.
Performance Development
This video presents excerpts from earlier theatrical productions, puppetry performance, ensemble staging, and character-based explorations that inform the current stage adaptation of Tales of a Jaguar Magician.
THE BOOK SERIES
The Source Material
Tales of a Jaguar Magician is a five-book mythic series developed over more than a decade and published through Jaguar Moon Press.
The books combine queer myth-making, magical realism, and allegorical storytelling to explore identity, transformation, and the evolution of consciousness through contemporary narrative forms.
The theatrical adaptation translates this literary mythology into a five-act stage work.
DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Theater as Myth Laboratory
The stage adaptation is developed through an interdisciplinary rehearsal process combining:
mask and puppet fabrication
ensemble staging and movement
spoken text and narrative structure
projection and lighting environments
audience engagement and script laboratories
Community workshops, open rehearsals, and staged readings allow the work to evolve in dialogue with audiences while refining narrative clarity and staging language.
